May Pack Committee Meeting

Posted on Apr 18 2012 - 11:12am

The May Pack Committee Meeting is on Wednesday, May 16 from 7 - 8:30pm at Mike Culligan's home - map attached.  (there was a conflict with May 6).  This is a very important meeting - we review the Pack 598 2012 Summer/Fall and 2013 Winter/Spring calendar and budget.  All leaders - especially new leaders - are encouraged to attend. See note from Derick Smith below:

The month of April marks the end of our Pack’s ‘fiscal’ year.  As such, I try to capture all outstanding expenses to be reimbursed in this month in order to support our budgeting for next year.  The month of May is when we settle on our budget and plans for 2012-2013.

With that, please let me know asap if you have any outstanding expenses you need reimbursed by the Pack.  Please organize/summarize your request--You can scan and email the receipts to me, and I can mail you a check; or we can connect somewhere and trade items.  I’m looking to have all Pack checks cashed by April 27th.  If you are holding any checks I have given you previously, please cash them.

Next, at the last leadership meeting, you were encouraged to think about 2012-2013 activities and expenditures.  By May 1st, for budgeting:

  •  please send me a note with any suggested new or alternative activities to our regular outings and total approximate cost/summary
  • if you propose the Pack purchase any capital assets or other expenditures, please work that up and email me.  Examples of previous capital items include the new Pinewood Derby Track system, our campout canopy, and also a projector.

I’ll get all proposed items into a budget for the new year.  At our May meeting, we’ll review and approve the budget and plan for the new year.

If you are aware of any special funds or donations the pack will receive in 2012-2013, let me know that too for budgeting.

This is your opportunity as Leaders and parents to have a voice in how the Pack plans it year and spends the funds raised.

As always, our objective is to give as much value back to the boys/families as possible while placing the Pack in a solid financial footing for future activities.

Also I would like to note that Dale Dodds has accepted to be the new Treasurer when I rolloff at the end of 2012.  In the interim, he’s our new Asst Treasurer.  Thank him when you have the opportunity.

Pack Leadership Transition - Call for New Leaders

Posted on Apr 18 2012 - 11:11am

UPDATE:  We had a great discussion at our last Pack Committee Meeting and new leaders are emerging.  But, we still need people to step up for the Outdoor Coordinator positions, Pack Committee Chairman, Religious Badge Coordinator, Popcorn Kernal, and we want an Ast. Cub Master from the current Tiger Rank.  Please contact Tom or Mike if you are interested.  Announcements on Cub Master and other positions are planned at the next Pack Meeting.

Tom Stark will be stepping down as Cub Master after the May Picnic.  Rich Weiland and family are transferring to Angola this summer.  We want to identify a new Cub Master and Assistant Cub Master and we want to replace Rich Weiland with two people to co-manage outdoor activities - one that is more focused on paperwork and one that will lead the camping logistics.

Dale Dodds has agreed to replace Derick Smith as treasurer (thank you - this is a key role!).  Mike Culligan is looking to transition the Committe Chair position during the fall.  We also need to identify leaders for several more key Pack positions:  Pine Wood Derby Co- leadership; Popcorn Kernal; Religious Badge Coordinator; Scout Fair Tickets & Booth; Summer Camp.

PACK 598 IS STRONG - AND WE WANT TO REMAIN THAT WAY - PLEASE STEP FORWARD TO HELP LEAD!!

May Pack Picnic

Posted on Apr 18 2012 - 11:11am

The May Picnic - our end of the school year final Pack Meeting - will be on Saturday May 19 from 11am - 3pm.

The event will be at our usual location - Cullen Park - Pavillion E - see map attached.  Paul Babasick will be coordinating food for the event and we need a volunteers to coordinate scout activities, including the Adult vs. Scout tug-a-war.  We will be presenting badges to a couple Dens and we will present neckchiefs for next rank to all the scouts.  Contact Mike Culligan if you can help with activities.

More details to follow - but mark your calendars.

Pack 598 Summer Activities

Posted on Apr 18 2012 - 10:46am

We discussed summer activities during our last Pack Committee meeting.  We are looking for a few new and fun activities for the Pack this summer.  Normally - we have a July 4 parade and swim party at Nottingham neigborhood - and that will still occur.  We also agreed that last year's pre-school skating party was worth repeating in early August.  We can do an Astros game on scout day and we have a proposal to do a Kemah Boardwalk gig.  Attendence is always lower in the summer - but contact Mike Culligan if you have any ideas.  Thanks.

Trees for our Future - Giving Back to SJV

Posted on Apr 18 2012 - 10:45am

UPDATE: We are hoping to present Fr. Troy or his representative with the Pack 598 Trees for our Future donation at our next Pack Meeting.  So far we have one big one from the Pack plus at least 4 others.  If you are interested in joining the contributors - please contact Tom.  Thanks.

SJV has asked for help replacing trees lost on the SJV campus lost during the recent drought.

Given the success of Pack 598 recent fund raising - the Pack Committee agreed to use Pack funds to buy one large oak tree for the Trees for our Future program.  Giving back to our Charter Organization for all their support - in a way that links to the outdoors and sustainability seemed like an appropriate way for Scouts to say THANKS.

We are inviting any family in the Pack that would like to participate along with the Pack to contribute a tree in honor or memory of someone special.  Our hope is that the Pack can present several trees to this worthy cause.  Please go the website below for more details - including the forms you must file with the Parish office:  http://www.stjohnvianney.org/mediafiles/trees.pdf.  Please let Tom Stark know if you are interested so he can coordinate our gift to the church.
